WPI BioTech Futures
We are also pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the spring Biotech Futures events to be held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)!
Wednesday, May 25, 2016, 8am-2pm OR Thursday, May 26, 2016, 8am-2pm

The goal of Biotech Futures is to demystify the college experience, expose students to diverse life sciences fields, and encourage students to pursue life sciences careers. Through Biotech Futures students and their teachers/guidance counselors visit university/college campuses, interact with science/technology faculty and students, and engage in a number of short laboratory experiences. The Biotech Futures program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute is designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have demonstrated and/or expressed an interest in the life sciences. Recommended group size is 30-45 students per school, although we might be able to accommodate smaller and larger groups. We require that students be accompanied by at least one school representative. We highly recommend that guidance counselors participate in this event.

To apply for the WPI Biotech Futures, please click here and upload the requested information. Schools will be notified by the beginning of April as to whether or not their school has been selected to participate.

SPOT Grants

Through support of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center and Fisher Scientific, MassBioEd has created a new equipment grant program, the SPOT Grant Program, for the 2015/2016 academic year. This program will provide teachers with a one-time grant of up to $3,500 to be used for equipment or lab consumables that support life sciences related laboratory activities. The equipment and reagents must be used to implement a specific laboratory or activity that provides students with an authentic, hands-on science experience. The lab or activity should be new to your students and, to the extent possible, highlight biotechnology tools and techniques. MassBioEd’s intention in creating this program is to award one grant per school to qualified applicants. A few more SPOT grants remain. We recommend attending one of the above workshops, as relevant to your grant, to receive the necessary training for implementing your grant activities. Click here to learn more and to apply!

Graduate credit is available for a fee to participants who complete the program. Whether commuting or residential, attendees must participate fully in each day’s activities, including the mandatory evening sessions.

Activities include: Biotechnology lab skills and practice, visualizing molecular biology with models, plasmid identification, PCR amplification of human DNA and genotyping, testing of GMO foods using PCR, cloning and transformation to create recombinant microorganisms, and identification of recombinant microorganisms.

Biotech Bootcamp for High School Students

Biotech Bootcamp is a 5-day course designed for high school students interested in gaining hands-on research experience in molecular biology and biochemical techniques. The course will be held July 11-15 from 9AM – 4 PM. The cost of the program for non-residential students is $770 and includes lunch each day. A residential option that includes housing and a full meal plan is available at the cost of $1,272/students.
